CarbonX welcomes Battery Competence Cluster NL: building a stronger Dutch battery value chain together

Delft, The Netherlands– October 17, 2025

This week, CarbonX welcomed Mustafa Amhaouch, Director of the Battery Competence Cluster NL, for a working visit to its headquarters in Delft. During the visit, Amhaouch met with the CarbonX founding team Rutger van Raalten (CEO), Daniela Sordi (CTO) and Jan Geschiere (CFO) to discuss the Netherlands’ role within the European battery value chain and the contribution that innovative materials can make.

The strength lies in the ecosystem,” said van Raalten, CEO of CarbonX. “The Netherlands should use its unique position in the value chain and has everything it needs to take a leading position — from battery materials and components to specialized battery applications and knowledge. By working together as one front, we can accelerate the commercialization of our innovations and strengthen Europe’s position in the global energy market.”

The discussions centered on CarbonX’s technology: an innovative carbon material that can replace largely imported graphite in battery anodes. This material can be produced in Europe at equal or even lower cost per ton, while delivering higher battery performance. The development supports Europe’s ambition to reduce geopolitical dependence on critical raw materials and lower the environmental footprint of battery production at the same time.

Mustafa Amhaouch, Director of the Battery Competence Cluster NL, described CarbonX as “a strong example of Dutch deep-tech innovation with impact.” He added: “Their technology is promising and scalable. CarbonX demonstrates how the Netherlands, through its innovative companies and research institutions, can contribute to a competitive and sustainable European battery industry. The challenge now is to convince European battery producers one by one of this solution.”

The Battery Competence Cluster NL plays an important role in connecting companies, research institutions and government bodies within the Dutch battery ecosystem. This collaboration is crucial as the European battery value chain rapidly takes shape.

We also believe that collaboration is the key to acceleration,” concluded Van Raalten. “By joining forces within the national ecosystem, we can build new partnerships, further develop our technology and work together towards a sustainable future for the European battery industry.”
